Well, for my part I didn't have a lot of male friends until I started university (lots of boys studying history ).
Before that I had two, maybe three male friends, and I ended up together with one of them... and it is much easier to be friends with males for me now, because before I had a boyfriend, I often found myself wondering: "Could there be something here?" when I was getting to know a boy.
But yeah, I'm convinced there can be perfectly platonic friendships even though the friend is of a gender you're attracted to
